KInd, Final project

http://prezi.com/g1mbqtkkerph

their daily and basic task. Such as, dog walking, get groceries, house cleaning and so on. Everyone is welcome to use it, because as we know, we don’t always have the time to do all our activities for different circumstances.

This app is simple to use and it doesn’t take that much time to learn its functionality.
Log in/sign in screen. First, if you are not a member you need to sign in and then it works as any other app, you need to log in to create yours tasks.
People can create their own profile; on this screen we have two buttons that are big enough and really easy to distinguish.

Find a task.  By touching on the text “Find a nearby task” or “Search all tasks” you are able to see tasks that other people post and you are interested on. Or a code if a task is popular like “dog walking”.

Task details. With a black background and white typography it is easier to identify what it says. A ‘check mark” and color green are activated once you add something. And it’s red when you haven’t added anything. Those 2 colors are easy to understand.

A map and GPS screen to find the place where the task is.

You can share your task in social media websites. So people know what are you doing and probably they might be interested in your services as well.

Analysis of an Interactive App

The MTA Subway Time app for iPhone is an Internet application that provides real time and schedule time for subway in New York City.  This app tracks all subways, when they will arrive so the waiting time can be avoid.
Main screen contains the name of the app, logo and instruction on how to get started. It has lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and the S 42nd street shuttle. Figure 1.
Next, we pick a subway line on the main screen, train 4, for example. We’ll be redirected to a second screen that contains all the subway station of the subway 4. Name of every single station and if they count with handicap access.
On top of the screen the option of the other lines will be shown in case we decide to change subways and below there is “back bottom” if we want to go to the main screen. Figure 2.
Next step, let’s say we are close or in Bowling Green station, so we pick that station and this step take us to another screen. Bowling Green station is on the top of the screen because there is where we are. It shows both direction, uptown and downtown. And it shows up to the next four-subway time. Since the subway 4 is an express line, it shows the time of the train 5 also, since both usually stop at the same subway stations during their route. On the top, we have the other subway lines as in screen 2. There is the same “back bottom” that it takes you to screen 2 and then to the main screen.  On the right, we have a “refresh bottom” so we can refresh and get the new wait time. Also, if there is any “planned work” or “service change” that be shown right above the name’s station on the last screen. Figure 3.
This app is just those three screens, you can get lost or anything likes that. It is easy to use.
The name of the app “Subway Time” and the little logo of the front of a train and the three curves on top of it simulate the Wi-Fi connection you need to connect to it or the Internet connection if you don’t need/want Wi-Fi.
The colors of the subway lines and numbers are just the same so if we see them in an app, we automatically know that it refers to the subways in the city. And doing the connection with the title of the app we know it is to know how long we need to wait for the next train.
Constraints for this app, sometimes the times are not corrected, they are supposed to be synchronized with the ones in the subway station. A minute can be too much time if you are in a hurry that day.

As we know, our smart-phones are computers, so apps are like tools that make it work better and help us to do everything faster for work or entertainment. The elements of this app are not that many. Icons for the subway lines, titles, and instructions are the elements that make everything easy and not confusing at all.  In the first screen those elements look a little too much, making the screen full of information, but at same time it is easy to read. In the second screen, subways lines are on the top, back bottom and then all the subway station of certain line, line 4, in this case. You need to scroll down or up to find the subway station you want. If you are not from the city or if you don’t know the name of them, you might need a subway map app, also, in addition to this want.  In the third screen, after we selected our station, we have 4 different destinations which are uptown or downtown. Here it is a little confused again, because it doesn’t say which one are going uptown or downtown. And there is a little too much information. And if you don’t know the destination, well, you might take the wrong direction.
But if you have been living in the city for a while you have an idea of which direction you should take.

Icons, information, titles work as a whole to bring an easy way to be on time to catch the subway. It is like a scheme, you go from one main screen with different options to a second screen with so many more option (subway station) and then you go to a third screen which is the end of it. After that you can’t go forward, you need to go back or pick another line from the top, which brings you back to the second screen with so many option (subway stations) but it is a different line now.

Principles of Design

Proportion

As we saw in class, proportion, refers to the relative sizes and scale of the different elements in a design. Our body, the human body is the universal measure. Everything is related to our body. The size of a room, office, streets are made in a scale related to our body. There is not a sidewalk too width, for example. Well, in this picture we can see that proportion is not related to our body. The Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building is located in Harlem. As we can see this building is too big compare to a human body. As Tim mentioned in class, government buildings are usually like that, so they can express power, control and intimidation to people. The building covers most of the frame in this picture. The building is the main element in the picture. As a second element is the statue is in the lower right corner. Even this statue is three times bigger than people walking on the street. Our third element is that people that vaguely is seen. Because the building and statue count are more visible, of course due to their size. When I took this picture I noticed I felt small, I used to take classes in that building and even when you are walking to the door the feeling of power is imminent. However, you can feel secure too. Because you know you are going to walk into a big building that it’s taking care of. Of course there is this fear at the same time because buildings like that are targets for attacks. Over all, people can feel small when walking by this kind of building. Even when walking by the “small” statue next to the building.

Balance

There are two different kind balances, symmetric and asymmetric. Both of them count with balanced elements. This is also, visual equilibrium. For this concept, I am using a picture I took couple of years ago. In this picture I am with my friends on a rooftop party. First time I saw this picture, the concept of balance never crossed my mind. But now, I can see there is balance, we made it work. Even thought we did not planned like that. There are four people, two trees in the back and there is a mural on the wall across the street.  Those are the elements that make this picture work with the concept of balance.  In the foreground, there are four people who are sitting two to the left and two to the right. One tree to the left and one to the right and in the background the mural. The mural counts with four people that more visible to us. In some way, those people are divided equally to the right and left.  Balance in a picture makes me think everything is in order, under control. Even thought is not always like that. I feel the weight of the elements is equally divided also. It is a asymmetric picture, however it still exists a visual equilibrium.

Emphasis

Emphasis counts with one main point or element that defines an image. It could be more elements to complete the composition of the image. In other words, emphasis in an image shows the purpose of it. There is not subliminal messages or something like that. They want to communicate what they want without messing with your head. It is obvious what they want to tell. This image, for example, the message that the MTA wants to give is obvious. Do not delay subways by trying to hold the doors and get on when subways about to leave the station.  The colors in the images are gray and red with a white background. The subway and people are in gray color while the person trying to get on the subway is red. People that are not involved in issue the MTA faces everyday is just staying there and watching how a desperate person (red) tries to get on. The person that is trying to get on is holding the doors and sliding into it. This image is shown in so many subway station and a message that it says, “ please don’t hold the doors” I think the image is clear enough to prevent people to do that. It is clear and of course emphasizes the fact that if we do that, the subway gets delay.

Rhythm

It is a visual beat. Rhythm is like a pattern the same elements are repeated but there are variations of it in the pattern so it becomes rhythm. It is a little more difficult to describe this concept in a image. But according to the dictionary, rhythm in art, represent our desire for order. It is just difficult for me to express when I see an image with this concept. But I am using this image of a heartbeat. I could have used an image of a building, which it’s not difficult to find, especially in New York. But I was reading what rhythm means in art and when I read the part “it is a visual beat” I only could thing about a heart beat so I decided to pick this image. I feel like the ‘beat” is going to move at any moment. I feel that it is going to synchronize itself with a heart. This image has a pattern with its variations of course.  It counts with three larger lines, three mediums and three smaller and the variation of them it’s that the third section of it is in a different direction.  It has an order and makes me feel that this imagine doesn’t count with variations until I see it more carefully.

Negative Space

Negative space is the space around and between the subjects of a image.
There is a two-tone way to do it, black and white. The subject is in black and the space is white. We can reverse this technic in which the subject is in white and the space in black, this method is called figure-ground reversal. The image I am using as an example for this is the Apple logo.  This image is an example of figure-ground reversal. The main logo, the apple, is in white and the space is in black. However in this image what it caught my attention is that the silhouette of Steve Jobs is in the apple. This makes me think that Jobs’ silhouette is the main subject and the apple is the space. So I can see that this image counts with both ways to create negative space. Subject is in black (Steve Jobs) and space in white (apple) and the figure-ground reversal in which the apple is the subject and the space in black.  This image is a variation of the Apple logo in which usually the subject is the apple in white or black, it depends on the product this company is using it.
